The Commercial banks

In addition to the Central Bank, Bank of the Republic of Haiti, the Haitian banking system consists of six national commercial banks: SOGEBANK, UNIBANK, CAPITAL BANK, BANQUE DE L’UNION HAITIENNE, BANQUE NATIONALE DE CREDIT, BANQUE POPULAIRE HAITIENNE and two branches of foreign banks: SCOTIABANK and CITIBANK. All standard international financial transactions can be conducted at any of the banks. Banks work from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday and from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. All types of international financial transactions can be performed by those banks. The country’s official currency is the Gourde (HTG) and the exchange rate is an average of 42 HTG to the US dollar. Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted.
